Characteristics of the Jatco CVT-S
- Low-friction ball bearings
- Uses ball bearings for the shaft support bearings. Contributes to improved fuel economy.
- Double-pinion planetary gear with 4 planet trains
- Contributes to reduced gear noise when reversing.
- Integrated pulley and parking gear
- Eliminated bottom lands of the gear. Contributes to reduced size and weight.
- Tandem piston
- Optimized piston shape. Contributes to reduced size and weight and improved fuel economy.
- Reduced sheave and oil pressure wall thickness
- Integration of oil pressure wall and parking gear. Contributes to reduced weight.
Lower friction
The CVT-S features a tandem piston structure for the pulley pressure chamber and low-friction ball bearings. In addition, a baffle plate was provided for the transmission gears, and lubricant distribution, pulley hold pressure, and final gear ratio were all optimized. As a result, friction has been reduced by 8% compared with conventional CVTs in the same class.
Smaller and lighter
Weight reduction measures were thoroughly considered for each part, leading to improvements including a reduction of the inner diameter of the pulleys and a thinning of both the sheave walls and the walls of the pressure chamber parts. These measures reduced the weight by roughly 6% (about 4.2 kg) compared with conventional CVTs in the same class.
Improved noise, vibration, and harshness performance
Gear noise when driving in reverse has been reduced by adopting a double-pinion planetary gear configuration with 4 planet trains. In addition, the coupling rigidity with the engine has been improved by optimizing the coupling geometry and coupling points between the engine and CVT.
